How on earth did this happen? It's not even that cold in Edinburgh at the moment - so it can't have been frozen pipes! It's really not good enough. I take it you're not going to bother letting the children back on Friday, as what would be the point. Are the school going to cover loss of earnings for parents affected? Of course not. They don't plan enough and parents suffer. When this happened at our children's school they had the problem suitably rectified in a day, although that was because of burst pipes due to temps falling well below 0. Got to love schools in this country - slightest breeze & it all falls apart.

Some of the underground pipes have corroded causing leaks. As the water was not going into the heating system as required, the whole school system was affected. As soon as the faulty section of pipe is replaced and 10,000 gallons of water is restored to the network of pipes we will be up and running again.

As a former pupil of Liberton High, (left 24 yrs ago)it seems nothing much has changed from then, school was closed frequently during the colder months (great at the time). However as a parent of a pupil attending Liberton High at present,i feel its unfair to blame the Head Teacher for this. Perhaps 1 solution would be for parents and teachers alike to get together and be heard and hopefully the powers that be will listen and replace the existing coal system for a more modern and effective heating system. Keep up the good work Liberton.

Hi Diane - I appreciate your gesture of support, but I don't think anyone was blaming me for pipes corroding under the ground. At least I hope not! I am also pleased to tell you that the coal fuelled system was replaced a year ago by a very modern gas boiler. In recent years, I am pleased to say, that I cannot recall the school being closed during term time. The current difficulty with a corroded pipe is just one of these things that happens. I fully understand the frustration of parents who are having to make arrangements for children at short notice and also the joy of some children who are able to enjoy this lovely weather during this unexpected holiday. I know that the council will now look at replacing the entire pipe, next summer, to minimise the chances of this type of disruption happening again.
